Android Development Path
Hi,
I have been looking for weeks for tactical racing software and had been looking at Sailclever for PDA's - unfortunately it looks like they are out of business. So I was delighted to stumble across iRegatta! It looks absolutely fantastic and just what I need.
So now I'm planning to acquire all the hardware to run it. I have never been an Apple fan and would prefer to run it on a Samsung Galaxy note. This helps because the hardware (Tacktick NMEA + Serial Bluetooth Dongle) is cheaper than that require to run the iPhone (Tacktick NMEA + WiFi Multiplexer).
The problem is that it looks like the iPhone App is far further along the development path. I especially like the ability to capture a waypoint using photographs!!! It will be really useful where course marks are moved during or between races.
I note that the Android version doesn't seem to have this (and a few other features). So I was wondering if you intend to add these in later releases? Also, is it possible to record all the NMEA data from the instruments for analysis on a PC later? - I am especially interested in Strip Charts for True Wind Speed True Wind Angle, Mean Wind Direction, Boat Speed, Leeway, and heel angle and hoped that I could somehow record them..
Maybe you could post a comparative feature list or something?
Anyway, really looking forward to being another customer and thanks so much for devoting your time to this project. Very impressed.
Will.

Hi Will.
I believe we've been mailing since your post, but I'll put an answer here as well.
iRegatta for iPhone/iPad has been around for over 2 years, while the Android version only has been around for over 2 month. This means that the iPhone/iPad version is more mature and more feature packed.
The plan is to continiously develop the Android version as well as the iPhone/iPad versions - BUT, the variety of hardware on the Android platform is a pain for the developer, so some features may be left out on the Android platform.
Most features probably will be available on iPhone/iPad first.
The Android version is planed to support NMEA input via WiFi as well by April or May (No guarantees).
Hi Jan, when you say "support
Hi Jan,
when you say "support NMEA input via WiFi" you mean ad-hoc connection also?
A couple of suggestions:
-do you think is it possible to automatically activate BT starting iRegatta?
-I think it could be nice to prevent the system to put the screen in off mode during the race.
Regards.
WiFi ad-hoc is only possible
WiFi ad-hoc is only possible using Android 4.0 and onwards. My test hardware is supposed to get updated to 4.0 in april, and then I'll start developing WiFi support for iRegatta on Android.
Great looking product. I am
Great looking product. I am developing a similar app for my Pantech Element, which is a waterproof 8" tablet that runs under 3.2, but you have done a much, much better job with design. I think you really captured the essential elements of start timing. Your screens look great. So congrat's!!!! I'll keep going with my development for 3.2 to get me through the upcoming racing season but will buy your product when it is available for 3.2.
Super app. Keep up the great work!
Hi Joe It should work on
